Cool breezes, cool sounds

It was steamy out there. I call it “air you can wear” when the humidity level is right up there near the actual temperature. Teachers, students, and parents were sweating. Our crew and performers were sweating. I was sweating, and I was cranky—I’ll admit it. Bees were plentiful while shade was not, my umbrella broke, my water got knocked over, and I had an attitude.

But it was back-to-school night and Heartland Sings was there with our Art-V™ to put on a show. Our four principal vocal artists, Natalie, Antonio, Lisa, and Wagner, were singing, dancing, and entertaining like they always do. They were not complaining. Eric was manning the sound board and ensuring that the iPad didn't overheat, with one foot on a pole base to ensure that our canopy didn’t fly away. He was not complaining. Families were eating their picnic food and children were playing, and they were not complaining. Hmmm…perhaps an attitude adjustment was in order on my part.

Then something simple happened that completely changed the atmosphere: more clouds rolled in to block the sun. The strong breeze brought a bit more relief. And people started dancing. Mostly children, but a few brave adults as well, danced as if it was not 90+ degrees. I even hoofed it a bit myself, with Jude patiently trying to lead me in some actual dance steps.

The professionalism of our singers inspired me. The smiles, laughter, and enviable energy of the children inspired me. I realized I was taking things way too seriously, and I really didn't need to sweat the small stuff. Even though I was literally sweating. A lot.
