Heartland Sings presents Choral Masterworks

Fort Wayne, Ind., May 4, 2018 – On Sunday, May 20th at 4:00pm, Heartland Sings presents this season’s finale: Choral Masterworks at Plymouth Congregational Church. Two exquisite masterpieces are featured: Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem and Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms.

The opening work on the program is one of the most beloved pieces in the choral repertoire: Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem. This transcendent work for SATB choir with organ was first published in 1948. The composer dedicated the piece to the memory of his father. Although Duruflé wrote the Requiem using the lush musical language of his contemporaries, all of its melodies, according to the composer, are “based exclusively on themes from the Gregorian funeral mass. Sometimes I adopted the music exactly, leaving the orchestra to support or comment, in other passages [the chant] served merely as a stimulus.”

Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms is tuneful, tonal and contemporary, featuring modal melodies and unusual meters. Through its use of motivic repetition, there is the sense of a hallowed rite. From the time of its sold-out world premiere at Philharmonic Hall on July 15, 1965 conducted by the composer himself, it was apparent that Bernstein had created a unique blend of Biblical Hebrew verse and Christian choral tradition; a musical depiction of the composer’s hope for brotherhood and peace.

Choral Masterworks will be held on May 20th at 4:00pm at Plymouth Congregational Church, 501 West Berry Street in Downtown Fort Wayne. Ticket prices are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, $10 for students and are available at heartlandsings.org/tickets or by calling: 260-436-8080.
